Jason Gerhart of Greencastle is helping to organize the annual Franklin County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association fundraising golf tournament. He is hoping to increase participation in the 2012 event set for May 24 at Penn National.

The Franklin County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will host its 22nd annual golf tournament and sports banquet on May 24. Tourney committee member Jason Gerhart is serving for the first time, and hopes to drum up more teams to support a cause he believes in.

"We provide three endowed scholarships for students at Penn State Mont Alto, and want to expand that to all campuses," he said.

He is working with Jill Kessler, Eric Walker and Fred Young III, with help from the Mont Alto staff too. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. at Penn National Golf Club.

Gerhart, Greencastle, is a 2005 graduate of PSU and joined the alumni group immediately. His company is sponsoring a team, so he will be playing in the tournament for the first time. He noted that the scholarships were need-based, and students did not have to apply directly. The college financial aid officer would select the recipients.

Though the scholarship fund is endowed, he said, "We are still raising money to offer larger amounts in the future."

The tournament will provide dinner after the rounds, with door prizes and raffles. The most popular item is tickets to the Penn State/Ohio football game.
