First Friday Greencastle celebrates Oktoberfest
First Friday in downtown Greencastle will be holding its Oktoberfest celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.
This month's event offers something for everyone, including a free outdoor concert, free hotdogs, free beverages, kid-friendly activities and a pumpkin decorating contest.
Headlining First Friday on the square is the Maryland-area blues band, Rudy and the Bluefish. Their mix of blues and bluesy rock favorites ensures a good time for all. The Ted Mercado State Farm office is sponsoring the band and will be giving away free hot dogs.
In keeping with the Oktoberfest theme, Bob's Florist is holding a pumpkin decorating contest. To participate, stop by the shop starting on Sept. 30 to pick up a small pumpkin and complete an entry form. The entry fee is $1.50. The pumpkins can be embellished using markers, paints and glitter. Finished pumpkins must be turned in by Thursday, Oct. 6. They will be judged and placed on display during First Friday.
First Friday also welcomes several new businesses to the downtown area: Upscale Consignment Shop, Kline's Bookstore and Sweet Pea Dessert. Sweet Pea Dessert will be having its ribbon cutting and open house at 5 p.m.
October also features beer, wine, and coffee tastings. Tuscarora Mountain Winery will be featuring its wines at its location. John Allison Public House will have samples from Roy Pitz Brewery in Chambersburg. Highline Coffeehouse and Café will have free samples of their Fair Trade Organic coffee from Nicaragua.
Many artists and vendors are taking part in this month's First Friday including those who specialize in pottery, jewelry, handmade soaps, meditative art, Sharpie marker art, pastels and original artwork, feather hair extensions, handcrafted hair accessories, photography and folk art dolls.
The Greencastle-Antrim High School Art Club will also have crafts for kids and face painting on the square.
In anticipation for the November First Friday event and the holiday season, a First Friday poster contest to depict what the holidays in Greencastle mean to you is underway. For more details and to pick up an entry form/poster, visit the First Friday table on the square or participating businesses.
