Sheetz, Wawa offering free coffee through 2020. Here's how to take advantage of it
Looking for a free cup of coffee this holiday? If you live in eastern Pennsylvania, you've got options.
The comfort of Sheetz
Love a good Sheetz coffee now and then? Well you're in luck: All Sheetz locations in the mid-Atlantic will offer customers one free self-serve coffee every week during December and January.
All 614 Sheetz locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio are slated to participate starting Nov. 27, just in time for Black Friday.
Sheetz has a cult following in northeastern Pennsylvania, with several locations miles away from each other. The company lovingly calls fans of the chain "Sheetz Freakz" online.
The free coffee offer will be uploaded to each MySheetz Card holder’s account each Friday in the months of December and January until Jan. 22, 2021. Each coffee will be redeemable for one week after it is uploaded to the cardholder’s account.
Sheetz traditionally has given customers a free cup of coffee on Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The new holiday coffee program was implemented with safety in mind in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a Monday press release, the popular chain planned the coffee program in an effort to keep employees and customers safe by keeping up "social distancing as the pandemic continues" and limiting large crowds.
If you live in the Poconos, where the Lehigh Valley meets the anthracite region of NEPA, you may have to make it a road trip: The closest Sheetz location is about 34 miles away in Whitehall Township. If you live a bit further North, you're in luck: Luzerne and Lackawanna counties are home to eight Sheetz locations.
Seeking a Wawa?
Wawa, another popular chain in the Keystone state, also is serving up free coffee for the rest of the year. Self-serve coffee is free for Wawa Rewards members on Tuesdays until Dec. 29.
To become a rewards member, simply download the app to your smartphone. Learn more online at wawa.com/about-wawa-rewards.
Like Sheetz, Wawa has a loyal following in the mid-Atlantic region, with just about all of its Pennsylvania locations on the eastern side of state. In the Poconos, you can find a Wawa just about anywhere you need one: near the campus of East Stroudsburg University, to Brodheadsville or downtown Stroudsburg Borough.
The Pennsylvania battle: Wawa or Sheetz?
Things got heated Monday when sports channel Big Ten Network posted in honor of National Fast Food Day, calling out the regional divide in the Big Ten collegiate athletic conference. A battle between Sheetz and Wawa loyalists in Pennsylvania soon followed.
The Twitterverse imploded with fans going to bat for their favorite gas station/fast food combo, with some comparing the competition to the presidential race. Twitter user Jack Newton wrote: "Sheetz vs. Wawa may be a bigger question than Trump vs. Biden in Pennsylvania."
Both companies are headquartered in Pennsylvania, but the battle is as regional as it gets — Pennsylvania Sheetz territory starts in the Lehigh Valley and extends to the Western part of the state, while Wawa is more concentrated in eastern Pennsylvania.
One Twitter user lamented, "Why does Pennsylvania get Sheetz AND Wawa?"
We will leave that question up to the universe while we enjoy our Sheetz fried cheese curds and Wawa hoagies.
