One dead in Interstate 81 crash that snarls Greencastle travel

A multiple vehicle accident on I-81 Sunday morning that snarled travel in Greencastle resulted in the death of one person.

Pennsylvania State Police reported one fatality from the 9:35 a.m. crash on Interstate 81 north near mile marker 6 in Antrim Township. Other injuries are also reported.

The area experienced a blowing snow storm for several hours Sunday morning.

The interstate was closed in both directions for several hours. The south lanes opened around 1:30 p.m. North lanes will reportedly be closed for an undetermined amount of time as a reconstruction team works at the scene.

Traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Exit 5 in Greencastle and at the Marion exit creating heavy loads of vehicles on Route 16 and U.S. 11 in Greencastle. Rescue Hose Co. fire police were on duty at the intersection of Route 16 and U.S. 11.

Initial reports indicated up to eight cars were involved in the crash.
