With a year and a half under his belt, Dirk Mowen has settled into his new role as operations manager at Ganoe Paving. Owner and president David Ganoe decided to step back from daily duties in order to spend his time on other interests.

Mowen, a Greencastle native with 25 years of experience in the construction and paving industry, came onboard in December 2011. He gave notice to his former employer, Kinsley Construction, and said goodbye to commutes to Frederick, Md. and jobs in the metropolitan area. He joined forces with a longtime friend.

"It was a good opportunity for me," said Mowen, 52. "I enjoy being closer to home and working for Dave."

He manages the day to day operations for the 15 employees. The company serves a territory within a 100-mile radius of Greencastle, and even bids on projects for Kinsley.

Mowen brought a vision to expand services from paving, which included line striping and seal coating, to now offer earthwork for customers. He added excavating, and water and sewer work for governmental, commercial and residential clients. The broadened ability keeps his crews busy year round, not just during paving season. He has won contracts with both the Borough of Greencastle and Antrim Township.

"We are not just a paving company any more," Mowen stressed. "With my experience, we are expanding to different avenues."

Already, he made upgrades at the facility, located at 1455 Buchanan Trail W. Ganoe built the new site eight years ago and it has made life easier for the staff.

Ganoe remembered the old days farther west, across from Talhelm's Gas. "It was below the hill, and every time it rained, we had to move the equipment."

Admitting it was difficult at first, he is pleased with his decision to turn over responsibility to Mowen. "Dirk is doing a superb job."

Mowen lives in Antrim Township with his wife Jenna. They have two grown daughters.
