Mountain View Reclamation Landfill invites the community to attend its annual open house. On Saturday, Oct. 5, Mountain View Reclamation Landfill will demonstrate where your plastic sacks of trash end up.

Waste Management will host its annual open house, giving away hot dogs and chips from 12 to 3 p.m. at Mountain View Reclamation Landfill, 9446 Letzburg Road, west of Greencastle.

The landfill at Upton is one of two in Franklin County, and methane burned at the landfill produces electricity.

"We do this to educate the public about how an environmentally sound landfill is operated," said John Wardzinski, district manager at Mountain View. "It's also our way of giving a little something back to the community."

Visitors should plan to spend about an hour if they want to eat and take a bus tour of the landfill, according to Wardzinski.

Mountain View has hosted an annual open house for more than a decade. Typically, 150 to 200 people attend each year.
