Terry Shade, executive director for Lutheran Home Care & Hospice presents the agency's 2012 Physician of the Year Award to Dr. Joseph Thornton.

Dr. Joseph Thornton of Greencastle Family Medicine has been awarded the 2012 Physician of the Year Award by Lutheran Home Care & Hospice and LIFE Lutheran Services.

Dr. Thornton was nominated by Lisa Beaver, Hospice RN. In nominating Dr. Thornton, Lisa noted that he “uses a holistic approach and looks at each of his clients as a whole person.  He treats them with the utmost respect.  He is extremely sensitive to the clients that I share with him in the hospice spectrum.  He is always very willing to accept advice on med regimes to keep clients comfortable.  He has conversations with his patients about end of life issues and knows their wishes, spending time with them.  He is honest and up front with patients about their disease and patients have often told me how much they appreciate that.  His goals, for our hospice clients, are about increasing their quality of life."

Dr. Thornton was presented with a plaque and pen at the staff Christmas party at Greencastle Family Medicine where he practices. The plaque bears the following inscription:  "In recognition of your devotion to the health, comfort and quality of life of your patients; your commitment to the betterment of our community; your dedication to providing health care of the highest quality; and your recognition of the value of home care services."
