Rita's opens in downtown Greencastle
Rita’s Italian Ice opened Friday in downtown Greencastle, the culmination of two years’ anticipation. Owners Nicole and Cameron Price, and operations manager Jennifer Hann wanted a store in Greencastle. They already have shops in Chambersburg and Waynesboro, as well as two mobile units.
The exterior and interior of 17 Center Square were extensively remodeled, and the borough trimmed the large tree in front so the business is visible from the street.
The search for a suitable site took time. “We had two options and chose this location because it’s so cute and quaint and in the corner,” said Hann.
“The community is so welcoming,” said Nicole Price. “They’ve been asking for a Rita’s. We offer a different type of product.”
The variety of foods is wide. It includes gelati, for which the franchise is known. That treat is made of layers of custard and ice. Other menu items are Italian ice, soft pretzels, and Blendinis, which is ice, custard and candies - M and Ms, Reese’s Pieces or Cups, Heath Toffee, Snickers, Oreos, Nerds and Mallow Wafers. They are also expanding into custard cakes and cookies, and milkshakes.
“Our ice is made fresh daily, with fresh fruits. I like to say the flavor is infused,” said Hann.
Rita’s is open Sunday through Thursday, noon to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, noon to 10 p.m. Its season is March through mid-November.
However, the staff is busy year round. “There’s more to us than meets the eye,” continued Hann.
The winter is spent lining up events for the traveling units, catering, working with businesses on employee incentives, and setting up fundraising campaigns for organizations.
