What better way to start the holiday shopping season than shopping local. On Friday, Nov. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m., First Friday has an evening of music and shopping in store.

That evening, First Friday will be announcing the winners of the holiday poster contest. The winners will receive the desserts of their choice from Sweet Pea Dessert, and the posters will be on display throughout the downtown area.

For musical enjoyment, First Friday welcomes back Blues musician Pete Lancaster who will be performing on the square and showcasing the various styles of Blues music.

Several of the downtown shops will be having holiday open houses, and many artisans will be participating this month. Select from barn wood birdhouses, pottery, photographs, jewelry, handmade soaps, gift baskets, decorated glass blocks, handcrafted hair accessories, Sharpie maker art, handmade baskets and handmade gift tags and cards.

In addition to the artisans, Gallery 7 will be open at 107 E. Baltimore St. and will be showcasing the work of even more talented artists in the area. The high school art club will have turkey crafts and face painting for the kids.

November also features free beer, wine and coffee tastings. Tuscarora Mountain Winery will be featuring its wines at its location. John Allison Public House will feature craft ales from Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Highline Coffeehouse and Café will have tastings of its organic, single origin Sumatra coffee.
