Greencastle business honored for supporting guardsman

AFMS, Inc. was presented the Patriot Award for their outstanding support to Guardsman Garret Dawson. The Patriot Award is issued by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve from the Department of Defense. The Patriot Award honors the employer for employment policies and practices that are supportive of their employees' participation in the National Guard and Reserve.

Garrett Dawson, 27, of Waynesboro, works for AFMS, Inc. as Information Technology Specialist. Garret has been employed with AFMS for over four years and shortly after his employment he decided to join the Guard. His initial training took him from his civilian position for little over nine months.

"Ever since I returned from the initial training, there have not been any issues," Dawson said. "I appreciate all the support," Dawson said.

Robert Smith, President of AFMS Inc. received the award presented by James E. Astor, the volunteer south central area representative. Astor, former commander himself understands the responsibilities that both employer and guardsman's face.

Smith, who served nine years in the Army, founded AFMS, Inc. in 2001. AFMS, a Service- Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, has been ranked fourth among the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the last four years.
