Manitowoc Crane conducts more layoffs

Manitowoc Crane in Shady Grove conducted a third round of layoffs for 2009, with company officials saying the economy still affects the global demand for its products.

On Oct. 1 another 165 employees lost their jobs, both hourly and salaried. In early winter 740 employees were laid off.

The employees have access to the resources of Franklin County CareerLink to determine their benefits and look into retraining opportunities.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the county’s unemployment rate in August was 8.8 percent, up from 4.8 percent a year ago. National figures are in, with unemployment in September at 9.8 percent, up from 6.2 percent a year ago.
