Ramblers to play in Class 3A in Hershey; Tigers to compete in Class 2A
Alec Thomas will call upon his aquatics regiment to ready himself for Cathedral Prep's latest tennis dual.
The senior, like the rest of the Ramblers, will rise before dawn to prepare for Friday's 8 a.m. matches against the Unionville Indians.
Their dual is the first of four PIAA Class 3A boys team tournament quarterfinals scheduled at the Hershey Racquet Club, the host site for all remaining rounds.
Competing so early won't be an issue for Thomas, a St. Bonaventure University swimming recruit.
"When I was with USA Swimming, if it was 5:45 (a.m.) I was up," he said. "Morning sessions started at 6:30, so 8 was like sleeping in for me."
Also in action Friday, albeit at a starting time closer to normal, are District 10's other boys team tennis champions.
Fairview and Moravian Academy will meet in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal of the state's Class 2A bracket.
The Tigers are 17-2 overall. The District 11 Lions, located in Bethlehem, are perfect at 16-0.
Fairview's 2012 team advanced to the PIAA's 2A final. Those Tigers remain the only District 10 boys tennis team to ever advance that far.
Prep's 2018 team resumes its open quest to not only equal what those Tigers did, but then become the first from the district to go all the way.
The Ramblers (14-2) resume their historic bid against Unionville, the top seed from District 1. The Indians play out of Kennett Square.
Friday's winners advance to Saturday morning's semifinals. The 3A final follows at 3:30 p.m. and the 2A final at 5:30.
