Mr. Raymond E. Sanders, 99, of Sabillasville, MD, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at his son’s home in Emmitsburg, MD.
Born December 11, 1923 in Iron Springs, PA, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Ruth (Riley) Sanders.
Mr. Sanders served with the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Germany and went to Normandy a month after the invasion. He also served with the National Guard for over 30 years.
He and his wife, the late Betty Jane (Fox) Sanders, were married on September 13, 1947. Mrs. Sanders died on November 18, 2015.
Mr. Sanders worked at Fort Ritchie, Cascade, MD, as a heavy equipment engineer. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, the Knights Columbus, and the American Legion Post #239, Cascade. He was a life member of the Blue Ridge Sportsman’s Association and a former member of Eagles Club, Inc and William Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post #695, both of Waynesboro.
Mr. Sanders enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and hunting mushrooms.
He is survived by five children, Deborah M. Sanders of Waynesboro, Rita M. Pickett of Chambersburg, PA, Larry J. Sanders and his wife, Vicki of Cascade, MD, David R. Sanders and his wife, Deborah of Waynesboro, and James S. Sanders and his wife, Linda of Emmitsburg, MD; his son-in-law, Michael J. Rathvon of Cascade; one grandson whom they raised, Jeffrey Sanders and his wife, Christy of Kearneysville, WV; 11 additional grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend and caregiver for the past 4 years, Lula Turner.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca A. Rathvon and Mary E. Dunlap; four sisters, Viola Toms, Ann Sanders, Kathleen Linebaugh and Darlene Eyler; and three brothers, Paul Sanders, Harold Sanders and infant James Sanders.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 22, 2023 in St. Rita Catholic Church, 13219 Monterey Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, with Rev. Peter DiTomasso, MSSCC officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fairfield, PA where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Sunday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
