The spring sports season was lost to the coronavirus pandemic and if life returns to normal by this fall, Greencastle-Antrim sports fans will still have to use portable toilets.

The Greencastle-Antrim Education Association Board of Directors voted unanimously last week to postpone the Kaley Field project until 2021. Construction of a facility for restrooms, ticket booth and concession stand was originally scheduled to begin this spring, with the building opening with the fall sports season.

“We really had no other option at this time,” Garon Gembe, chair of the GAEF board of directors, said in a press release. “With construction restricted by the governor and fundraising directed toward basic needs for those in our community, at this time, we feel we have made the prudent decision to postpone the project."

The new timeline has ground being broken in spring 2021 and completion by Aug. 1.

Jeff Shank and Vernon McCauley, GAEF board members, co-chairs of the project and G-A graduates, announced that Eagle Construction, a Greencastle construction company, owned by Frank Traver, another G-A alumnus, has been named general contractor for the $600,000 project.

Forty percent of the funds needed for the project have been secured to date, according to Cheryl Brown, executive director of the foundation.

“Fundraising efforts will resume this fall with ceremonial check presentations from local businesses in our community,” Brown said. “There are opportunities to get involved at every level, including memorial and honorarium bricks for $250 each.”
