Proceeds from the Greencastle-Antrim High School Holiday Door Contest will benefit students across the district next Christmas.
Monday morning, representatives of the G-AHS Student Council Executive Committee presented a check for $835.56 to Shaun Basalik, president of the Exchange Club of Greencastle.
The money will be used by the Exchange Club to provide gifts for needy students in the district. About 180 district students received gifts in 2019. Basalik explained children up to 13 get presents while those 13 and older receive gift cards.
The Holiday Door Contest is an annual event at the high school, but this is the first year monetary votes and community service were involved, according to Glory Sterling, student council adviser.
About 40 doors were decorated with holiday cheer and each homeroom was given a money jar. Change counted as votes, while cash could be used to subtract from the total. The contest ended with $744.56 in change and $91 in cash.
"We're super happy with the total," Sterling said.
Jennifer Ditchcreek's homeroom won the contest and a pizza party.
