ELLWOOD CITY — Ellwood City Area School District's soccer club is getting another shot at funding through the school board.

The board has scheduled a special meeting at 8 a.m. Friday to talk about a funding request from the club and any other business that might come up.

Last week, a motion failed 4-4 to provide up to $4,300 to the boys and girls teams for transportation and referee costs. At the time, the board suggested a meeting be set up with district Athletic Director Curt Agostinelli to get his views on whether it would be proper to fund the club, now entering its third year, despite an agreement from the group's formation limiting district financial involvement.

School director Barb Wilson, speaking on behalf of the club's boosters, argued last week that the teams are not being treated fairly when other club sports receive district funding and the agreement should be invalidated because the boosters were not involved.

She added that the club is losing money without district support because Shenango School District officials, whose students also are participating in the club, has agreed to pay a pro-rated amount of expenses covered by Ellwood City Area. Without local support, there is no Shenango contribution, Wilson said.

Board members who voted against the funding request said they are not against helping the students, but wanted to make sure the matter went through the proper channels.
