  • Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed to the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, announced today that George Zimmerman has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Corey said Zimmerman turned himself in Wednesday, and he has a new attorney.
This comes one day after Zimmerman's former attorneys made a public announcement saying they are no longer in contact with their client and they can no longer continue to represent him.

Corey was assigned to the case by Florida Gov. Rick Scott after the Sanford, Fla., police department faced criticism of its handling of the case.
In addition, Martin's death has triggered nationwide protests and debate about the issue of race in America.
Martin and Zimmerman engaged in a struggle on Feb. 26, which ended in an unarmed Martin being fatally shot. Zimmerman claimed the shooting was in self-defense under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law.
Zimmerman recently created a website, www.therealgeorgezimmerman.com, explaining how this incident changed his life and how people can donate money to his living expenses and legal defense.
