Three Alfred State College students are in the Allegany County jail for what police are calling a prank gone bad.

Reginald LaCrete, 19, of Scranton, Pa., Christopher Dent, 19, and Frandy Ovinas, 19, both of Florida, were each charged Monday night with second-degree menacing and unlawful assembly, according to ASC Police Chief Greg Sammons, for frightening several students.

Sammons said around 10:40 p.m. Monday in the MacKenzie Hall dormitory, the trio approached several students with ski masks on and demanded cash. No items were taken from any of the victims.

“One of the students said they had a gun, even though no weapon was displayed,” said Sammons.

Sammons said several students were frightened and police were called in for an investigation.

“Luckily officers were there within a matter of seconds and apprehended all three of them,” said Sammons, adding, “An investigation is ongoing to determine if they were with other people. We have reports that there were up to six people involved.”
