OBITUARY: Jay R. Hess

Jay R. Hess, age 84, of Greencastle, and a resident of Menno-Haven in Chambersburg since June 2011, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 in the nursing center.
Born March 26, 1927 in Antrim Township, he was the son of the late Stine and Anna (Byers) Hess.
He graduated high school from Messiah Academy in 1947.
On May 7, 1949 he was married to Eleanor (Light) Hess by Bishop Charlie Byers in his home.
In his early years Jay enjoyed helping on the family farm.  He was first employed by E.L.M. driving the store on wheels.  He then was employed by the former Lanehart Construction Co. and A.G. Crunkleton Electric, both of Greencastle.  He was last employed by the Greencastle-Antrim School District as a custodian at South Antrim Elementary School from 1984 until his retirement in 1991.
He and his wife owned the former Bandbox Shoppe in Greencastle.  After retirement he enjoyed working part time at Christian Light Bookstore in Chambersburg.  He also provided janitorial service at the Greencastle branch of Orrstown Bank.  
Jay was a lifelong member and faithfully attended Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church near Mercersburg.  He served as church trustee for many years, was a Sunday school teacher and also was a Bible quiz coach.  He served as treasurer for over 20 years for Gospel Tide Hour.  He enjoyed attending sales, restoring old tools and collecting canes.
Surviving family, in addition to his wife, are sons, Curtis (wife Cynthia) Hess of Ephrata and Carlton (wife Suzanne) Hess of Chambersburg; daughter Celina (husband Benjamin) Stoops of Shady Grove; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Byers (wife Edalene) Hess of Greencastle and Glenn (wife Barbara) Hess of Lebanon; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Stockslager of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janice Stockslager.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1 from the Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, 6727 Montgomery Church Road, Mercersburg, with Pastor Raymond Martin officiating.
Private burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.
