A State Line man was taken into custody Thursday morning following a high speed chase that ended in an accident in Funkstown, Md.
Brian P. Bennett, 21, 729 East Ave., was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot in an aggressive manner, which drew the attention of a Maryland State trooper. The officer began a pursuit at 8:35 a.m. March 18.
The SUV went around two cars at a stoplight at Baltimore Street and Edgewood Drive, then headed north on Edgewood toward Dual Highway. It made a U-turn and went south again.
The police report the SUV struck a Jeep stopped in traffic, swerved and hit a wall at the Stouffer Avenue intersection, then hit a utility pole and rolled onto its passenger side.
The officer said Bennett kicked out the window and tried to flee. The officer pulled out his service weapon, ordered Bennett to lie down and arrested him. He was taken to the hospital.
The woman driving the Jeep was also taken to the hospital for a head injury.
The fallen utility pole resulted in loss of power for 36 Allegheny Power customers. It was restored by 1 p.m. Edgewood Drive was closed immediately after the accident.
Washington County District Court records indicate Bennett was charged with 13 violations, including 11 related to driving and two for eluding police.
