National Night out, sponsored by the Greencastle Police Department, will take place Tuesday night of Old Home Week. From 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3, the community is invited downtown to meet with officers in a relaxed atmosphere. Fun and games will be part of the evening on South Carlisle Street and Center Square.
Youngsters can participate in the Jr. Detective Scavenger Hunt. Everyone entering kindergarten through 12th-grade who picked up a passport at the police department the previous week. Police secretary Nicole Bowser will be available between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to handle the registrations and answer questions. The detectives will solve clues about local businesses, collect stamps from them and be entered into a drawing. Awards will be given during National Night Out.
The department is providing a safe way for residents to dispose of expired medication. Anyone in Franklin County should bring the medications to 36 S. Carlisle St. between 1 and 7 p.m. No questions will be asked.
As a way to promote awareness on safety issues such as drug, alcohol and other criminal problems, Greencastle police will join in the fun in some light-hearted activities. They and local officials could get dunked in a special booth.
Jail and Bail citations will be issued to raise money to upgrade security at Jerome R. King Playground. Citizens may pay $2 and ask that their friends, relatives or co-workers be arrested. The suspects will then be allowed to pay a $2 fine or spend 10 minutes in jail in the window at Papa John’s Pizza. Citations may be purchased at police headquarters ahead of time the week before National Night Out.
Other activities at the special event include the presence of police cruisers, Rony the K-9 unit, and the bicycle patrol. Educational displays on drug and alcohol safely will be set up by various governmental agencies.
