A company that transports hazardous waste, hazardous materials and recyclables wants to open a transportation and warehouse facility near Shady Grove.
Tradebe Environmental Services has filed a conditional use application for the existing warehouse at 1620 Buchanan Trail East, owned by Nelson Shank and formerly the site of a pallet company, in a community commercial zone. A public hearing will be held by the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors and the Antrim Township Planning Commission around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, during the regular supervisors meeting.
Warehousing is allowed as a conditional use in a community commercial zone, according to Sylvia House, Antrim Township zoning officer. Recommendations for conditions on the use will be made after the hearing.
"The waste from our customers never enters the buildings in which we occupy, but is transferred on the available dock spaces on the exterior of the building," according to paperwork filed with the township by Tradebe. "The warehouse on the property will be utilized for new drum sales and service equipment storage. On average, our organization purchases large volumes of containers quarterly."
The market area for the Shady Grove site is Pennsylvania, Maryland and northern Virginia.
House said Tradebe contracts with places like Letterkenny and Fort Detrick to remove large quantities of chemicals like paint and paint thinner.
"The only floor space required in the building would be for the new containers brought to the facility for resale, approximately 3,000 square feet," the document says. There would be two full-time employees working 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Packing materials like empty barrels and wrapping would be kept at the warehouse for resale to clients to fill and prepare for shipping, according to House, who said no recycling will be done at the site.
Tradebe has more than 20 transportation and disposal facilities in the United States, as well as locations throughout Europe and Asia. It "specializes in minimizing the industrial carbon footprint throughout the world."
The paperwork says, "The position of the warehouse allows us to be away from congested roads and businesses. There is a very low risk if any for an increase in noise, dust, litter, glare, vibration, electrical disturbances, waste water, storm water or solid waste generation at the proposed facility."
