The resignation of President James Winslow from the Greencastle-Antrim School Board was accepted with regret at Thursday night's meeting and anyone interested in replacing him has until noon Monday, June 18, to submit a letter to the district.
Vice President Tracy Baer was elected to replace Winslow as president and Eric Holtzman was elected vice president.
Winslow been a board member since 2014.
He expressed his thanks for the opportunity to have the "humbling experience" of serving on the board and as its president, explaining he was not a good student and failed out of college before serving in the military.
"It's the most amazing thing to see the amazing community of this district as a whole," Winslow said, citing teachers, administrators and staff.
However, the fallout of the prolonged contract negotiations with the teachers union, which included the possibility of a strike, was a factor in his decision.
"It was a combination of everything," Winslow said after the meeting. "The negotiations were rough, I didn't like how it went on either side. People treat my wife and I differently in the community."
His wife, Nicole, is a fourth-grade teacher in the district and Winslow said there are people they were friends with for years who "walk past and won't make eye contact."
"From the day you came here you've been an asset to the community," said Holtzman, adding he is glad Winslow plans to continue to be active in trying to correct funding inequities at the state level.
Winslow has been outspoken about the funding formula that has not changed in years and benefits districts where the student population is shrinking, but works again the few districts like G-A where enrollment is growing.
At the teacher talks held by the Greencastle-Antrim Education during the contract negotiations, Winslow said he met other parents who want work together "to fix funding and get Harrisburg to do the right thing."
Letters of interest to serve out Winslow's term through December 2019 can be sent to Greencastle-Antrim School District, Attention: Tina Anderson, 504 E. Leitersburg St., Greencastle, PA 17225.
The board plans to conduct public interviews for the position at its meeting on Thursday, June 21.
