Signs are up and enforcement has started for an ordinance prohibiting parking, standing or stopping along South Ridge Avenue from Leitersburg Street to Addison Avenue weekdays between 7 and 8 a.m. and 2 and 3:30 p.m.

Greencastle Borough Council adopted the ordinance in March after it was suggested by two Boy Scouts, who identified safety concerns with cars stopping in the street and kids running across the road to Greencastle-Antrim High School and Middle School.

"Parents or guardians dropping off or picking up students at the Greencastle-Antrim school complex should do so at the designated area behind the school complex," according to Eden Ratliff, borough manager. "This is the safest option for the students while being in compliance with the newly adopted ordinance. Dropping off or picking up students in front of the school creates an unsafe situation for everyone involved including the students, vehicle operators, school buses and G-ASD staff."

Dr. Kendra Trail, superintendent, sent parents a map and a letter explaining the change and new traffic patterns at the high school and middle school:

n Middle school

Parents should drop off students directly behind the middle school at the area designated by the sidewalk entry. It is the area on the pavement indicated by the white hash marks.

"Navigate your vehicle to the left side of the parking lot close to the sidewalk and have your student exit the left side of your vehicle for optimal safety," Trail wrote.

There has always been someone at the back door of the middle school to let students in, but there is now designated staffing beginning at 7:05 a.m., Melissa Shuey, assistant principal, said at last week's school board meeting.

n High school

Parents dropping off their high school students in the morning will need to enter the school campus via Leitersburg Street. To maintain an efficient flow of traffic, parents will travel behind the middle school and high school buildings, turning left along the north side of the high school. The designated drop-off point for students will be on the side of the high school where the sidewalk in front of the building begins. Students will walk down the sidewalk and enter through the auditorium doors.

For pickups at the end of the school day, parents are asked not to arrive prior to 2:35 p.m. or 10 minutes after the bus bell on shortened days. Parents should pull their vehicle into the driveway lane directly in front of the buildings after buses have departed.

"Motorists who violate this ordinance will be promptly greeted and cited by the Greencastle Police Department," said Ratliff, who noted people with questions or concerns can call the borough office at 717-597-7143 or the school district at 717-597-3226.
