With all the current talk about getting kids outside and off of their electronic devices, local families took to Jerome R. King Playground in Greencastle on Saturday for the annual Fun Day hosted by the playground association.
The event offered children from preschool to middle school age the chance to enjoy games, balloon twisting, a magic show, pony rides, refreshments and more. “We’re excited to be here, there is lots of fun stuff for the little kids,” said Kristy Walter. “It’s always nice when there are kid-focused activities to do.”
Her daughter, Hailey Walter, took her first ride on a horse Saturday at the playground.
“It was great, I really liked riding the horse,” Hailey said.
There were many hands-on activities for the kids, and David Bowers and his wife Judy Bowers entertained with their magic show and balloon animals as David Wayne and Miss Penelope.
“The favorite thing that I like about performing is the looks on the kids faces when I do a trick,” said David Bowers. “That’s the biggest thing that keeps me going and keeps us young.”
The magic show consisted of optical illusions, making his wife’s head disappear and their own version of the hit television show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?”
"From my perspective as a community member, it doesn’t get any better than this,” said Georgina Cranston, executive director of the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce. “We fully support our new chamber member (the playground association), and we were happy to help promote their event. What a great last summer hurrah.”
