Members of a Greencastle church are looking for shoes to help get them to the Finish Line.
Praying Time Ministries is collecting shoes for Funds2Orgs to raise money for Operation Finish Line, the drive to pay off the mortgage on its fellowship hall.
Funds2Orgs will pick up the shoes and ship them overseas for people to resell, Dennis explained.
The shoes are consolidated by Funds2Orgs and shipped to developing nations around the world. In turn, the shoes are sold by micro-entrepreneurs who seek a hand-up, not a hand-out, from poverty, according to the organization’s website.
Praying Time Ministries at 300 S. Carlisle St. purchased the adjacent property at 45 Railroad St. about a year ago and has winnowed the $37,000 goal down to $25,000 with fundraisers like a gospel concert, bazaars and dinners, according to Pastor Cloretta Grice.
So far, 700 pairs of new and gently worn shoes have been collected. The goal is 3,000 pairs and the collection ends April 1, said Mary Dennis, coordinator of the shoe drive. She noted the church held a similar drive a few years ago and collected 1,700 pairs of shoes.
It’s hard to tell how much money the church will receive because Funds2Orgs pays by the pound. Little kid shoes barely weigh anything, while work boots can be really heavy, but all donations are appreciated, Dennis said.
Shoes can be dropped off on the porch of the fellowship hall or arrangements can be made to have shoes picked up.
Dennis said it is helpful, but not necessary for shoes to be tied or strapped together or paired with rubber bands.
