Firefighters battled a blaze on Sunday morning that caused major damage to an outbuilding on a farmstead at 3283 Sportsman Road.

The initial dispatch at 10:43 a.m. was for a working barn fire and firefighters arrived to find fire in a shed/outbuilding where wood was stored threatening to spread to other structures.

"I heard a noise outside and thought somebody was on the roof from the crackling. I went outside and saw everything in flames," said owner Bruce R. Fenton.

The fire caused major damage to the initial building, but firefighters limited damage to the other buildings, according to a report from Rescue Hose Co. Fire Chief Kevin Barnes.

"Extensive overhaul" was needed to completely extinguish the contents.

Firefighters and fire police from a number of area companies responded to help fight the fire, ferry water and control traffic on nearby roads, including Williamson Road and Kuhn Road.

In addition to Rescue Hose Co., the response included Marion, MMP&W, New Franklin, St. Thomas, the Franklins, Mont Alto, Maugansville and Leitersburg.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 1:50 p.m.
