Elks sponsors new Legacy scholarship For the 2009-2010 college year, the Elks National Foundation will award 250 four-year $4,000 scholarships. Greencastle-Antrim and Waynesboro high school seniors are eligible applicants. This is a significant increase in the dollar amount of scholarships compared to those awarded from 1999-2008. One-year $1,000 scholarships were awarded during these years. The Legacy Award is a meritbased scholarship. Financial need is not considered in the applicant's review for the award. Any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-grandchild or legal award) of a living Elk who joined the order before April 1, 2006, is eligible to apply. The Elk's member dues must be paid up through March 31, 2009. Legacy Awards may only be applied to accredited American colleges and universities, and cannot be used for vocational technical schools. Application addenda include SAT or ACT test scores, high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Either test must be completed by December 31, 2008. Applications must be submitted to the Student Aid Committee at Waynesboro Elks by Jan. 1, 2009, for forwarding to the Chicago office. Applications are available from the Elks Student Aid Committee at 762-4879. Dave Sanders, presiding officer at Waynesboro Lodge, encourages eligible students to apply for this $4,000 scholarship. "A special appeal of this award is that financial need in not a selection criteria. Since 1999, Waynesboro Elks has sponsored 12 winners in this National Foundation scholarship program. The Lodge is anxious to sponsor winner number 13 for the 2009-2010 college year." Winners are announced in April 2009. |
