Seminar to raise money for veterans memorial A seminar focusing on both local and national military history will be held at Greencastle VFW Post 6319 at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 with all proceeds going toward the erection of a Veteran's Memorial commemorating all those from the Greencastle-Antrim area who fell in our nations wars. Nationally known military historian Edwin Bearss is the keynote speaker. Bearss is the Chief Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service. He has appeared as a commentator on the History Channel, CSpan, and the PBS series "The Civil War", produced by Ken Burns. Bearss is a Marine veteran of World War II in the Pacific where he was seriously wounded by Japanese machine gun fire. He will discuss the war in the Pacific. Antietam National Battlefield Historian Ted Alexander will discuss the military heritage of the Greencastle-Antrim area from the French and Indian War to the present. Alexander is a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and is the author of several books on local military history. Exhibits of military relics from conflicts such as the Civil War and WWII will be a featured part of the event. Refreshments will also be included. Admission to the seminar is $10 and includes talks, exhibits, literature packet and refreshments. A raffle will also be held, featuring books on various aspects of military history, including those of the speakers. This seminar is open to the public, and reservations are not required. Admission may be paid at the door. |
