The Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils (5-0, 3-0 MPCCapital) blasted Big Spring away in the Homecoming football game Friday night.
The evening took flight with the parade and announcements of Homecoming Court, but when G-A hit the field the boys got down to business scoring 54 points and allowing the Bulldogs no hopes of scoring.
The first quarter yielded a commanding Blue Devil offense with Tyler Szaflarski and Adam Ritchey both scoring on 10-yard runs. Szaflarski began the night's excitement with a scoot up the middle for a touchdown just four minutes into the game. G-A offense worked up the field 45 yards and handed the first TD to the monster freshman.
Kendrick Reid made a key tackle on Big Spring quarterback Luke Etter, forcing the Bulldogs into fourth down with 19 yards to gain. When the Devils recovered control of the ball it took just three minutes for Ritchey to find the end zone. Nathan Pool had an accurate kick, making the score 13- 0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs could not hold possession of the football in the second quarter, fumbling it away three times. The Blue Devils took advantage of the mishaps. Brandon Trefelner started the period's scoring with a yard run for a TD. Senior D.J. Cordell forced a fumble from the Bulldogs on the kickoff return and Jason Koons picked it up returning the ball 36 yards for the score to increase the lead to 26-0. Brett Meyers loosened the leash on the Bulldogs when he threw an interception but Paul Peer was there to recover by picking running back Cory Cassell's fumble up and returning it to Big Spring's 25.
Trefelner took the ball six yards into the end zone just three plays later for his second TD of the night. To finish off the first half the Blue Devils pocketed another scoring run from Szaflarski to put their opponents in the dog house for the break. Trefelner was looking for more opportunities as the third quarter began and he seized a three yard run to the end zone with about four minutes left. Jake Statler scored a 15-yard TD at 7:21 in the fourth quarter and Pool added a good kick to end the game with a triumphant and lopsided score of 54-0.
G-A's command of the game was daunting. Big Spring had two first downs to the Devils' 27 and 48 offensive yards to G-A's 434. Trefelner and Szaflarski ran for a combined total of 232 rushing yards and five TDs. Jared Doyle, Koons and Peer had fumble recoveries while Andre McKenzie and Reid added G-A sacks. Pool added six successful PATs.
The Blue Devils are holding a 5-0 record, the program's best at this point in the season since 1999. G-A will put the unbeaten streak on the line when they travel to Lewisberry to face the Red Land Patriots Friday at 7 p.m.
