4-H pig club holds 66th annual show and sale

The 66th annual Franklin County 4-H Pig Club Show and Sale was held at the Greencastle Livestock Market Saturday, Aug. 9 with 57 4-H project animals shown, which sold for a total sale value of $24,430.

The Grand Champion pig, weighing 242 pounds was shown by John Sollenberger of St. Thomas and was purchased by Leidy Packing Inc; Cumberland Valley Co-op Assn. and 3D Stock Farm for $940 at $3.88 a pound. The Reserve Champion shown by Samuel Wingert of Mercersburg, weighing in at 272 pounds was purchased by Pest Patrol LLC for $430.

In the pen-of-two class champion honors went to Jenna Lehman of Greencastle, and was purchased by Trottwood Stables for $610. Reserve Champion honors went to Nicholas Wingert of Mercersburg and was purchased by CV Wenger Plumbing & Heating and Cumberland Valley Co-op Assn for $820.

In the Junior Fitting and Showing class John Sollenberger was declared Grand Champion while Samuel Wingert was granted Reserve Champion honors.

In the Senior division Nicholas Wingert was declared Grand Champion while Jenna Lehman was declared Reserve Champion.

The show was judged by Matt Trostle from York County. Roundup trophies were sponsored by AgChoice Farm Credit of Chambersburg while ribbons and rosettes were provided by the Franklin County 4-H Pig Club.

Triple K Acres and George's Mini Mart donated the pig they bought back for resale to benefit the 4-H Pig Scholarship Fund. They bought the pig a second time for a donation of $410 to the scholarship fund. Recipients of the scholarship in 2008 were Ben Beidel, Kristina Dice and Samantha Meyers.
