Jerry E. Houpt
Born January 14, 1946 in Antrim Township, he was the son of the late James W. and Mary Ellen (Provard) Houpt. He had retired after 25 years of service with the former United Telephone Co. as an installer and repairman. Mr. Houpt was a social member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 and the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, both of Greencastle. He was a member of the VFW horseshoe league. He was a PIAA umpire in baseball and softball and also umpired games in the Little, Pony, Legion and adult leagues. He bowled in leagues at Nellie Fox in Chambersburg and Dual Lanes in Hagerstown. His interests included listening to bluegrass music at the Arrow Horse in Gettysburg, hunting and raccoon hunting. Mr. Houpt was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and he was a veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He and his wife, Virginia L. (Helfrick) Houpt, were married July 30, 1967 in Waynesboro. Surviving family in addition to his wife are: two sons, Jerry L. Houpt of Chambersburg and Shane A. Houpt of St. Thomas; five sisters, Amy Rice, Gay Buchanan and Pam Clay, all of Greencastle, Nancy Keefer of Mercersburg and Betty Anderson of Pittsburgh; four brothers, David Houpt of Germany, James W. Houpt of Florida, Robert Houpt of West Virginia and Tom Houpt of Greencastle; and five grandchildren Services were held the morning of Tuesday, May 6 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating. Burial was in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.
