Spring workshops offered at Tayamentasachta

A variety of workshops will be offered this spring at Tayamentasachta, a Center for Environmental Studies, for interested residents They are open to families or individuals. The classes will be held at 500 Leitersburg Street.

Starting Your Own Plants will be at 7 p.m. April 15. Learn how to start your own vegetable and flower plants. Discussions will include choosing best varieties, transplanting and problems associated starting plants. Charles White will lead the class and participants will bring plants home from the session.

Introduction to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is 7 p.m. April 17. Jennifer Long and Daniel Melot will introduce the use of a GPS and discuss geocaching and GIS. Participants will practice with a unit and try a short orienteering course. The GPS units will be provided for the session.

Earth Day, I Do Make a Difference is at 7 p.m. April 22. Two Earth Science/Geo-Environmental students from Shippensburg University will present 'All Drains Lead to the Ocean,' on the effect of polluting watersheds. They will talk about trash, plastics and oils in the water, as well as the Chesapeake Bay. They promise engaging activities for all ages.

The final workshop is Backyard Composting, with a free bin given to participants. The limit is one bin per household. Tayamentasachta teamed up with Penn State Cooperative Extension for the session. Preregistration is required by calling 263-9226. The class is offered at 7 p.m. May 13.

Each workshop requires a $5 registration fee. Checks payable to EC Advisory Committee should be sent to: Tayamentasachta, 500 Leitersburg St., Greencastle PA 17725.
