Mom's Time Out

WAYNESBORO - The third annual "Mom's Time Out," sponsored by the Waynesboro Area YMCAChristian Emphasis Committee, will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Waynesboro Area YMCA.

The morning features a special two-hour training for moms focusing on three main topic area, affirmation, personal fitness and dealing with conflict.

Lunch will be provided. There will be door prizes and gift bags, along with books for children. Nursery and children activities will be available.

Speaker

MERCERSBURG - Scientist, conservationist, and author Tim Flannery, will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, March 31 in the Burgin Center for the Arts' Simon Theatre at Mercersburg Academy as part of the school's 2007-2008 Monday Evening Lecture Series. He will serve as the Ammerman lecturer.

The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

CareerLink seminar

CHAMBERSBURG - Pennsylvania CareerLink Franklin County will host a two-hour informational seminar on "How to apply for Federal Jobs, with emphasis on federal jobs at Letterkenny Army Depot. The seminar will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. April 3 in the PACareerLink Office at 600 Norland Ave. Arepresentative from the Civilian Personnel Office at Letterkenny Army Depot will conduct the seminar.

Museum activities

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Several activities are upcoming at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

The Museum Consort will present a recital at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 30 in a program entitled Step Up with Dutch Masters.

Art in Bloom returns to the museum for a sixth year April 4, 5 and 6 with arrangements on display from more than 20 gardeners. The ticket proceeds will benefit the museum.

Sculptor Paul Rhymer will present Sculpting: Going from Clay to Bronze at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6.

Engine show

ST. THOMAS - The C.V. Antique Engine and Machinery Association will hold its Spring Fling April 26 and 27 at the CVAEMA grounds at the Twin Bridge Campgrounds. The Spring Show and Flea Market will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 25. The show will feature Massey- Ferguson.

In addition to garden tractors, mowers, gas engines, tractors, steam engines and running displays, activities include blacksmith shop, toy show, indoor and outdoor flea market, tractor parades, antique tractor pulls, kiddie pedal tractor pulls, garden tractor pull and food stands.

Health fair

CHAMBERSBURG - Summit Health's fifth annual Health Fair is scheduled from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19 on the Summit Health Campus, located at 755 - 757 Norland Ave. The event features free health screenings, displays, a tour of the Summit Surgery Center, handouts, demonstrations and door prizes. The health fair will take place rain or shine.

Free screenings will include, glucose (sugar), lipid (cholesterol, triglycerides), bone density, hearing, and lung health. There will also be blood pressure, foot, and vision screenings. Adults, 18 and over, who plan to have their blood tested, should not eat for 12 hours prior to the screening.

Body and Soul Fitness

Body & Soul Fitness spring 2008 session "Loved By You" will be held at four locations in Franklin County began March 25, including in Greencastle at the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St.

The high and low impact aerobics/ cardio strength and resistance training classes are choreographed to Christian music for ladies of all ages and fitness levels.

The Greencastle classes are from 6:30 to 7:35 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

There is a cost for the classes.

Lecture

CHAMBERSBURG - The Franklin County Historical Society - Kittochtinny invites the local community to a lecture on Mary Jemison presented by Deborah Sandoe McCauslin at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, March 27 at Grove Family Library, 101 Ragged Edge Road.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.

TGIF 2008 concert series

CHAMBERESBURG - The Council for the Arts continues its Spring 2008 TGIF concert series from noon to 1 p.m. March 28 with a jazz salute of songs celebrating "Lyrical Ladies" as part of Women's History Month featuring Mickie and Stan Goldhaber.

Upcoming performances, at the Capitol Theater, are as follows: April 4: "Orchesis", Wilson College Dance Troupe; April 11: CASHS String Symphonette; April 18: Dan Dropkin, Native American Flutes; April 25: Mercersburg Academy Choir; May 2: Nancy and Jody Messich, "Island Music"; May 9: Candice Mowbray, Classical Guitarist; May 16: CAKE 45, Children's Choral Group; May 23: Chambersburg Jr. High School "HYPE" Dance Troupe; and May 30: Danza Antiqua, historical interactive dance at the Wood Center.

The Council for the Arts' TGIF Brown Bag series is an opportunity to sample first rate artistic performances in an informal setting. All performances are free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Jeff Dunham show

SHIPPENSBURG - The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University presents comedian/ventriloquist Jeff Dunham for a second show on March 29 at 9:45 p.m. Tickets for the first show at 7 p.m. are sold out.

Folksinger performance

CHAMBERSBURG - John McCutcheon, one of America's most respected and talented folksingers and instrumentalists, will perform at Wilson College on Friday, March 28. The performance, which is part of Wilson's 2007-08 Performing Arts Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Laird Hall.

Grief support group

WAYNESBORO - "Journey Together," a 6-week support group offered by Hospice of the Good Shepherd for adults who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one will be held at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren beginning April 2. The purpose is to provide a "safe place" where people will feel comfortable to share experiences and feelings. The group will provide information regarding grief and the process of mourning and suggest ways in which participants can reach out to others when they need help. Journey Together is not restricted to Hospice of the Good Shepherd client families - anyone in the community is invited and welcome to attend.

Journey Together begins on Wednesday, April 2, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 South Church Street, Waynesboro. It is free of charge but pre-registration is required. Hospice of the Good Shepherd is pleased to be able to offer this support group in Waynesboro for the first time. It is also offered in Chambersburg. The next Chambersburg "Journey Together" begins on Tuesday, May 13 at The Fleck Center, Luther Ridge Retirement Community.

Civil War seminars

CHAMBERSBURG - A series of Civil War seminars will be held through the fall at the Chambersburg Heritage Center.

The first seminar of 2008 will shine the spotlight on George Armstrong Custer, the flamboyant leader who was a hero of the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg before he lost his life at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Jeffry D. Wert, who wrote a book about Custer, will be one of the featured speakers during the March 27-30 seminar.

Other seminars scheduled this year include: Annual Lincoln Symposium, May 16-17; The Gettysburg Experience, July 23- 27; The Men Stood Like Iron, the Iron Brigade from Second Manassas to Gettysburg, Oct. 3-5.

Costs vary depending on the sessions attended. Price includes motor coach transportation for guided tours, seminar materials and some meals. Prices have been set for the Custer seminar, but are not final for other seminars.

There also are two scholarships available for the July seminar focusing on Gettysburg, one awarded to a student and one awarded to a teacher. Winners attend the seminar free of charge and receive an additional $100 stipend for expenses.

Seminar series

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Technical Innovation Center (TIC) at Hagerstown Community College will offer the second part of its seminar series addressing the major issues which all entrepreneurs face, from starting their business to handling opportunities and challenges that come with growth. All seminars will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the TIC, conference room 208.

Seminar topics include: Tuesday, April 1 - The Role of Debt in Company Performance; Tuesday, May 6 - How to Manage Growth Successfully; Tuesday, June 3 - Creating Business Alliances.

The deadline to register for a seminar is the Friday prior to its start date. The cost for each seminar is $5, which includes materials and refreshments.
