BRAC brings new construction to Letterkenny Army Depot Construction of a multi-million dollar missile complex, known as a Missile Monitoring and Certification Facility will soon be underway at Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD). On February 14 the depot was notified that funding in the amount of $11.6 million dollars was released to the Baltimore District Corp of Engineers who have awarded a contract for construction of the new missile complex on depot. Lobar. Inc., Dillsburg, PA was awarded the contract this week that contains a spring construction start date. October 2009 has been targeted as the anticipated completion date. The selected depot site location for the complex will be just north of the LEAD industrial area off Georgia Ave near the entrance to the munitions area. The location along with the design development and operational features of the missile maintenance facility, which must meet stringent explosive safety and security construction and operational requirements, was a joint effort between the Army Corp of Engineers, and multiple federal government and federal government contractor organizations. The missile complex will consist of buildings which will house missile containerization and missile disassembly/assembly areas, missile electronic component replacement/repair/diagnostic test areas and final missile assembly and missile round performance testing areas. An additional facility will house the supply, quality and managerial functions of the missile mission. As a result of BRAC 2005 the missile maintenance and recertification mission currently located at Red River Army Depot (RRAD) in Texarkana, TX has been directed to transition to LEAD. Transition planning is ongoing and will be executed in multiple phases to ensure an efficient transition and seamless impact to the customers. Employee relocation will begin as early as June 2009 and will continue into 2011. The workforce will consist of more than 100 employees including government technicians, engineers, and production support personnel. Government contractor personnel and engineers/ specialists from the missile manufacturer will also be located in the facility. |
