C. Romaine Hissong

C. Romaine Witter Hissong, 84, of 1425 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and formerly of Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, died at 6:30 a.m. March 10, 2008 in Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg.

Mrs. Hissong and her husband, Marvin D., had resided at the assisted living quarters of Penn Hall since Dec. 1, 2003.

Born Jan. 27, 1924 near Mercersburg, she was a daughter of the late Jere A. and Ruth Hege Witter.

Mrs. Hissong was a 1942 graduate of the former Mercersburg High school.

For many years she assisted her husband in the operation of the family dairy farm. For 10 years she was employed as a teacher's assistant in the Tuscarora School District.

She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ of Upton, where she taught Sunday school for 45 years. For a number of years she served on the Altar Guild Committee.

Mrs. Hissong enjoyed baby sitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a personal interest in vegetable and flower gardening. A ministry of Romaine's was sending greeting cards to family and friends.

In addition to her husband of over 64 years, Marvin D. Hissong, she is survived by six children, Jere D. Hissong and Larry W. Hissong, both of Mercersburg, Dennis R. Hissong and Beatrice K. Hoffman, both of Greencastle, Marvin E. Hissong of Lemasters and Gregory A. Hissong of St. Thomas; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; four sisters, Doris Demuth and Thelma Statler, both of Chambersburg, and Ruth Hamil and Nancy Olin, both of Mercersburg.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Services were held the morning of March 14 in Welsh Run Church of the Brethren with the Revs. Harold Yeager, Henry Hunsberger and Robert Keener officiating.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Arrangements were handled by the Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg.
