What a great season it was The Thrill of Victory...The Agony of Defeat. When I thought of that saying after the PIAA second round defeat to Scranton Prep last Tuesday night at Pottsville, I realized that most of the younger generation as well as most of the players on the GAHS basketball team may have never heard that phrase used before. But most parents and fans know that was a phrase that ABC's Wide World of Sports used at the beginning of the weekend sports programs that were aired long before the days of 24/7 sports coverage on cable TV. There was the thrill of victory as Levie Holman's last second shot against Franklin Learning Center at the CASHS' gymnasium sent the G-A faithful pouring on to the court with hugs, tears, smiles and high fives abundant. Then just days later feeling the agony of defeat in Pottsville as what at half time seemed like a sure thing slipped away to a persistent team from Scranton that left many sitting in disbelief and heartbroken that in the blink of an eye the season was over. OK, so the basketball season had a different ending than what everyone was hoping for, but let us never forget what a great season it was.
So to Coach Gembe, and assistants Eby and Pool and all the players… believe me, when we look at the banner in the gym next year for the 2007-2008 season, it won't be at what happened in the state finals, but it will be at how far you took the Greencastle-Antrim community - a division title and the most wins (25) in G-A history! |
