Garden Smiths creates beauty for its clients

Garden Smiths Inc. is a family affair. Nancy Smith, right, is president of the company and works alongside, from far left: son Waylon Smith, son Kyle Smith and his wife Arys O'Brien, and husband Bryon Smith.
Garden Smiths, Inc. is the business of creating beautiful gardens of exceptional quality.

President and landscape designer Nancy Smith says her company, founded Aug. 1, 2006, creates gardens based on customer wishes. She also designs them to be low maintenance and to improve with age.

"A garden increases the value of the home and life itself," she said.

She employs son Kyle as foreman and vice-president, and his wife Arys O'Brien and her other son Waylon as landscapers. Her husband Bryon will join the company when he retires from his truck-driving job, but he is credited with the business name and for encouraging the family to take the leap.

The team members all have experience in horticulture, most notably Nancy. She has worked in the field for 33 years and her educational background includes a variety of topics such as management of turf and greenhouses and floral design.

Garden Smiths serves residential and commercial customers. The landscape design and installation company also offers skilled pruning, construction of fieldstone walls, flagstone pathways and patios, fire pits and water gardens. Secure pondless water features are becoming popular because they provide the look and sound of water without water access.

Their business level has grown due to word-of-mouth and from neighbors watching them work on properties.

April and May are the busiest outdoor months but the crew works March to December. In the off months they keep physically fit for the upcoming season, create their portfolios to show clients, tend to their equipment and research horticulture issues.

They work in Pennsylvania and Maryland, having earned the Maryland Home Improvement Commission license.

The office is based at the Smith home at 262 N. Carlisle St. Consultations are by appointment only at 597-4208.
