Petty isn't pretty

The Blue Devils are at it again and the community is swept up in basketball fever. The boys' varsity squad has again put itself in the thick of the district fray this week and will take another shot at states next week.

Fans young and old are traveling to Giant Stadium in Hershey for the big games. What happens in the bleachers is as true a mark of Greencastle pride as what happens on the court.

Make us proud, fans.

We expect the players and coaches to play hard and play fair and accept victory or defeat with grace. We expect the same from the fans.

Everyone in the arena represents not only themselves, but Greencastle-Antrim School District and the community.

The decorum of the Blue Devil fans has been good for the most part, especially at the Giant Center Monday for the district semifinals that will go down as a classic battle between two deserving teams. We can be proud, especially in comparison to some of the disappointing and inappropriate language from a few of the opposing fans.

While Monday was a much better example of sportsmanship, certain behaviors in last week's games by clusters of GA students were not admirable. Calls onto the floor when an opposing player was shooting free throws and when a ref made a 'bad' call were embarassing to the honorable fans from Greencastle.

Because shouts of four-letter words were done in unison, it is obvious they were coordinated by a ringleader. This type of sportsmanship is not necessary at an athletic event.

Children and middle-school students are influenced by what they observe from high school students. May what they see and hear be something that elevates character and promotes respect.

We don't want to see our own players booed. Bad calls can be issued against either team. That's the nature of sports.
