Hoping to meet again

There are some who may think that we are jumping out on a limb or breaking a taboo in sports by wishing the Greencastle Antrim Blue Devil boys' varsity basketball team well as they begin what we hope will be a long postseason run. Rather, we think of it as a positive sendoff in what could be just as sweet a postseason as the Devils had last season.

We grant that to advance as the Devils did in 2007 it takes more than just the talent, hard work and determination that is evident in this group. It also requires a lot to go your way at each step; we'll call it luck.

It took a lot of hutzpa for this year's group to follow up last year's Cinderella season, and yet they did just that by winning the division in undefeated fashion and crafting a fine 20-3 regular season slate that has led to a solid position in the District 3-AAA tournament bracket.

The competition in that bracket may again be the keenest in the state. There are a lot of good triple-A teams in District 3, G-A included. The Blue Devils can compete with anyone in the bracket, feeding our hopes that G-A will return to the state fray.

If the Devils don't make the cut for whatever reason, it's no reason to lose enthusiasm. The regular season gave us lots of reason to cheer.

What the Devil hoopsters have been able to do the past few years has given us lots of memories. It has also galvanized our Greencastle-Antrim community like few other things in recent memory have. Kudos to the Blue Devils for a great season and we wish only good things for what we hope will go on for the next month.

You have our congratulations and good wishes to reach as high as possible. Here's hoping we meet again in Happy Valley. If it doesn't happen, it was a great and worthwhile ride.
