Landscape design course offered

CHAMBERSBURG - The Franklin County Master Gardeners will offer "Landscape Design and Plant Selection" workshops on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. , Feb. 13 through April 2 at the Franklin County Extension Office, 181 Franklin Farm Lane.

The Landscape Design series is for homeowners interested in creating a landscape design for their property, whether a new home or an existing home site.

The Feb. 13, 20 and 27 sessions will give participants the basics of developing a landscape plan: Feb. 13 "Drafting Basics", Feb. 20 "Soil and Plant Chemistry" and Feb 27 "Getting Started Part 1" will help participants analyze their existing landscape, and use basic tools and principles to build a cohesive plan for the future.

The remaining workshops will offer information on plant choices for a landscape, whether on a new property or an established landscape that needs some help: March 5 "Getting Started Part 2: An Artists' View of Your Landscape" is a continuation of the Feb. 27 workshop, and a view toward what your landscape might look like in 10 years.

March 12 "Growing 'Up' in PA and using Native Stones in your Landscape" will show participants how to make the most of vertical spaces within their landscape, and address the use of native stones to create garden functions.

March 19 "Native Plants in Your Landscape" will teach participants how to use native plants in their landscape, and will address the problem of invasive plants.

March 26 "Fitting Shrubs into the Landscape" will offer instruction on choosing appropriate shrubs in the home landscape.

April 2 "Trees in the Landscape" will address selecting and placing trees in the landscape.

"Principles of Landscape Design" workshops cost $10 for an individual class, or $40 for the eight-class series.
