Amyloidosis support group

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Amyloidosis support group will meet at noon Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Bob Evans, 1721 Dual Hwy, Rt. 40.

The group meets for a luncheon offering empathy, support and fellowship to let others know they are not alone with amyloidosis.

Resource management meeting

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management will hold its monthly meeting from 8 to 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at Homewood Suites, 1650 Pullman Lane.

The program will be "What a Workforce Development Program Means to Local Employers," presented by Pete Madeo.

HCC to offer classes at Fort

Ritchie

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Hagerstown Community College will offer classes at Fort Ritchie at Cascade, beginning March 17. The classes are open to the public and include courses for college credit, as well as continuing education classes.

Credit classes include English Composition on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3:45 p.m., Personal Health on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m., Intro to Information Technology on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8:45 p.m., and General Psychology on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8:45 p.m.

Art exhibit

CHAMBERSBURG - An exhibition of work by area printmakers is on display through Feb. 22, presented by the Wilson College Department of Fine Arts and Dance in the Bogigian Gallery, located on the second floor of Lortz Hall.

The exhibition will be a diverse show of differing printmaking processes and techniques. Subject matter will include landscape, still life, figure and abstraction. Penn's Woods Printmakers is a group of talented artists who regularly use the printmaking studio at Wilson College. Many of the artists work in their own studios in addition to the time they spend at Wilson, and the group often exhibits together in the region.

Members of the group include Greencastle residents Dawn Burgoon, Ruth Jordan and Laura Shindle.

Flower and garden show

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will present the tri-state area's largest and most extensive floral event, the 14th annual Flower and Garden Show, Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16 in the College's Athletic, Recreation, and Community Center. This year's theme is "Celebrate Spring!"

The event will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A variety of vendors will take part in the show, named as one of the area's premier events. Show participants include experts in nurseries, lawn and garden equipment, pottery and statuary, landscaping, tree services, stone products, herbs and violets, pools, spas, outdoor furniture, florists, wild bird products, and natural gourmet gifts from the garden.

Seminars and demonstrations on a variety of gardening topics will be held continuously throughout both days of the event. In addition, area garden clubs will set up displays and two quilt raffles will be held. Visitors are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy the gardening and activity area for kids. Lunch and snacks will be available at the Garden Café.

Admission is $4 for adults and free for children under 12. Proceeds benefit the HCC Alumni Amphitheater.

Stop smoking classes

WAYNESBORO - Staying Tobacco Free is offering free Stop Smoking classes every Monday through March 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Waynesboro Hospital in the Main Conference Room.

GED classes

CHAMBERSBURG - Free General Education Classes (GED) classes are offered at the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 Adult Education Center, 305 W. Commerce St. for adults wanting to prepare to take the GED test.

Classes are open year round and students may begin at any time. Enrollment can be accomplished by coming to class.

Classes are held from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday; 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Classes are free and open to adult residents of Pennsylvania age 16 and older who are not enrolled in a public school system.

Photography exhibit

MONT ALTO - A photography exhibit featuring the photos of Staci Grimes will be on display through Feb. 22 in the Penn State Mont Alto Library.

Grimes is a computer support specialist at Penn State Mont Alto. She has pursued photography as a hobby for over five years. Her education and experience in the fields of forestry and biology sparked her interest in nature and the environment. These are two of Grimes' favorite subjects.

Grimes has exhibited work in three different galleries: the Museum of Temporary Art in Mont Alto, the SHAPE gallery in Shippensburg, and the Carlisle Arts Learning Center. Grimes' work can be viewed online at www.sunsongphotography. com

WIN support groups

CHAMBERSBURG - Women In Need is offering a group for survivors of violence that will look at how to cope and move forward after a traumatic experience. Participants will be focusing on ways to identify and reduce stress. They will learn coping skills to help them deal with past traumatic experiences and will be challenged as they grow through these experiences. The group is open to sexual assault and domestic violence victims in Franklin County.

WIN Victim Services will also be beginning a group this month, open to victims of violence who are seeking insight into their relationships. Participants will spend time reading and discussing Lundy Bancroft's book "Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men". Group participants will discuss early warning signs of relationship violence, the abusive mentality, and the long, complex process of change.

Victims of violence interested in participating in this group should call WIN at 264-3056 to speak with Tammi or Erika for further information.

Community members interested in learning more about how to help those affected by violence can also call the WIN office at 264-3056. Volunteer opportunities and educational programming are available.

Country Western Dance

Association

LeVar Burton to speak

SHIPPENSBURG - Celebrated actor LeVar Burton will be the guest speaker at Shippensburg University's annual Gifted Minority Scholarship Fund program Feb. 21.

The annual program is held to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and to raise funds for the university's Gifted Minority Scholarship Fund. The fund was started in 1983 to provide academically talented and financially deserving minority students with the opportunity to receive a quality educational experience.

The program includes the annual dinner at 6 p.m. in Heiges Field House followed at 8 p.m. by his presentation in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the dinner and lecture are $40 per person. Tickets for just the lecture are $15 per adult and $5 for children 12 years old and younger. Shippensburg University students receive free admission to the program by picking up tickets in advance at the Luhrs Center box office.

Stamp and coin show

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Stamp Club is sponsoring the Hagerpex XXXVIII Stamp and Coin Show on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel, 1718 Underpass Way, Hagerstown.

For the first time, the show will include dealers in coins as well as stamps. A representative of the U.S. Postal Service will be in attendance until 3 p.m.

Admission is free. There will be free door prizes and a youth table featuring free stamps for young collectors.

Barbershop chorus

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in City Park will present the Mason/Dixon Barbershop Chorus in four-part barbershop harmony at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17.

The Hagerstown Barbershop Chorus was formed over 50 years ago and is one of over 800 chapters in this country and abroad. Membership exceeds 35,000 men, making it the world's largest singing society. The chorus, and one or more of the quartets, will sing songs of the early 1900s with some contemporary, comedy and gospel songs. In all cases, singing is done in the barbershop style: Lead (melody), Tenor (high notes), Base (low notes) and Baritone (whatever is left over).

Support group

CHAMBERSBURG - Turning Points, a bereavement support group sponsored by Lutheran Home Care Services/ Hospice of the Good Shepherd, meets from 2 - 3:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the conference room of Lutheran Home Care Services, Route 997.

The group is open to any adult who has experienced a loss and who wants to learn more about the grieving process in a

supportive atmosphere.
