The 100th day of school was celebrated one day early, due to the weather-related cancellation of classes last Friday. The first grade students at Greencastle-Antrim Primary School didn't care. They had money to deliver and were most enthusiastic to do so.
The youngsters gave $708.15 to Barb Schuit, Director of Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library, in a special annual ceremony Feb. 4. The money came in the form of dimes and one nickel.
"This is way more than last year," said Schuit when the total was announced and the students finished cheering. "I'm going to have so much fun picking out books to order."
She invited them to visit the library in the spring once the books arrived. She also showed them some of the books purchased with the donations from last year's first-graders.
The contributions from each of the 10 classrooms ranged from $43.40 to $132.50. Schuit placed each plastic bag into one strong cloth bag and groaned slightly as she lifted it. She then gratefully went to the bank.
