Heritage Christmas ornament this year depicts former school The 2007 Heritage Christmas ornament is the 16th in the Chamber of Commerce's series commemorating places and events significant to the history of the Greencastle-Antrim community. The image on this year's ornament depicts the school which stood on South Washington Street from 1916 to 1983. The school opened in 1916, replacing a structure which had been built in 1868. Originally, it housed both elementary and high school students, as had the earlier building. In 1925, the growing population caused the construction of a separate elementary school, just north of the 1916 school house. The current high school on South Ridge Avenue and the elementary school on Leitersburg Street, opened in 1960 and 1979, respectively. The schools on South Washington were demolished in 1983. The price for each ornament is $18 plus tax. Advance payment in full ($19.08) is required for pre-orders. Ornaments will be available for pick up the first week of December. Previous ornaments are also available for purchase. They honor the following places and events: Martin's Mill Bridge; Greencastle Train Station; Greencastle Town Clock; Tayamentasachta; Greencastle Rescue Hose Company; Anderson Grist Mill ; Five Arch Bridge; Allison's Tavern; Barkdoll Field; Old Home Week; Corporal Rihl & the Flag; Christmas in Greencastle; Browns Mill School; the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce; the Old Town Hall.
