November 7, 1907

The quietest election which has taken place in this county in many years was recorded.

Construction work on the extension of the C.G. & W. trolley line from here to Chambersburg has not advanced as rapidly during the past week as during the previous week.

The new road bed for the Williamsport Turnpike, which is being relocated by the Cumberland Valley Railroad so that the new belt line may cross the turnpike by an overhead bridge, is almost ready for use and the finishing touches are being put on the macadamizing this week.

Native Bruce Detrich pledged to match up to $100 contributions for Greencastle's Circulating Library.

C.V. Engineer Robert T. Davison has purchased from the heirs of Col. B.F. Winger the Hawthorne farm southwest of town.

The public reading room in the second floor of the Ziegler building, Center Square, was opened to the public. It has been handsomely papered, the woodwork repainted, electric lights installed and numerous comfortable chairs and tables installed.

The average temperature for last month was the coolest October average in the history of the county for 11 years.

The passenger station of the Cumberland Valley Railroad in Greencastle is for sale.

Unable to overcome the lead given by Adams County voters to their native candidate, John S. Rice, in the race for state senator from the Franklin Adams district, Senator Charles H. Clippinger of Greencastle who was seeking re-election went down to defeat by the narrow margin of 500 votes.

Friday, Nov. 11 will be Armistice Day and will be observed in Greencastle with a special service in which the Greencastle public schools and the Frank L. Carbaugh Post of the American Legion will join.

Rolling in the largest popular vote ever polled in the history of the country, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president of the United States.

A series of parades were planned in Franklin County by Democrats, including in Greencastle.

The vote in Greencastle is thought to have been the largest in the history of the town, with a total of 985 votes.

The Greencastle borough council began a search for missing borough records.

Investigations by the Greencastle borough authorities has revealed that the rates proposed by the Gettysburg Gas Corporation, which is anxious to furnish this town with natural gas, are higher, for the average consumer, than those proposed several years ago by a Pittsburgh company.

More than 400 people, including school children, parents and friends, attended a Hallowe'en party given by the Brown's Mill parent teachers association.

The Greencastle town council voted to transfer $2,000 from the checking account of the borough treasury to the savings account of the same fund, where it will draw interest as a time deposit.

Voters of Washington Township opted to float a $60,000 bond issue to finance the erection of equipment of a modern four-year high school.

November 11, 1982

The Greencastle-Antrim School Board planned to open bids on the empty lot of the old Greencastle Elementary School on Washington Street, however the building has not yet been demolished.

The Cumberland Valley Philatelic Society issued an illustrated envelop honoring the town's bicentennial and the adoption of the bald eagle as the United States symbol, both of which occurred in 1782.

Greencastle Borough Council approved a tentative budget for 1983 that contains no tax increase thanks to a hefty balance from the 1982 budget.

Greencastle-Antrim School District students who require additional immunization to meet new state requirements may visit a free state clinic in Chambersburg.

Greencastle-Antrim School District encourages citizens to visit local schools during American Education Week.

The Greencastle-Antrim Foundation has announced an open house at the newly rebuilt John L. Grove Medical Center.

Plans for the display of enlarged photographs of early Greencastle scenes promise an interesting and nostalgic experience for viewers at the Rescue Hose special events building.

The Franklin County unit of the American Red Cross honored Greencastle residents Martha Wolfinger, Viola Ervin, Ruth Rinehart and Julie Alleman.

Darlene Eberly discussed Sierra Leone, Africa missionary work at a meeting of the Greencastle-Antrim Junior Women's Club.

A petition calling for a halt to the nuclear arms race was signed by 750 voters in Franklin County on Election Day, Nov. 2.
