The Blue Devils battled valiantly to start the week and ended it with their first victory of the season. G-A hosted rival Waynesboro on Parents Night on Monday. The Devils' second half surge wasn't enough to overcome the Maidens.

The Devils let up a quick goal just five minutes into the game on a cross-circle pass. G-A held strong for six minutes before the Maidens put their second goal in to go up 2-0.

The scoring stalled for a little while until there was about 10 minutes left in the first half. They found the cage again on one of eight first half corners to go up 3- 0 at half. The Devils only made it into Waynesboro territory twice in the half but didn't get a shot on goal.

The Devils had a hard time controlling the ball in the second half as well. Waynesboro possessed the ball for much of the half but the Devils' defense didn't allow any second half goals.

G-A capitalized on its only opportunity. Sheena Koons ended the shutout with an impressive goal with four minutes to play in the game. However, the surge wasn't enough and the Devils fell by a score of 3-1. They had one shot on goal and one penalty corner. Tashsa Musselman had three saves in goal.

Senior Alesha Brechbiel controls the ball for the Blue Devils.
The junior varsity team won 1- 0 on a Halleigh Benner goal and an assist from Shyanne Smith.

The Devils hosted East Pennsboro Thursday. After a scoreless first half, the Devils put in three second half goals to top the Panthers 3-1 in their first win of the season.

The two teams played a scoreless first half, just like their first meeting this season. The Devils got one shot on goal in the first half.

G-A took the lead just two minutes into the second half when Steph Root got a cross off. Reagan Fuller got her stick on the cross, sliding it across the cage as Alesha Brechbiel deflected it into the cage.

The Devils produced their largest lead of the season about two minutes later. This time Brechbiel crossed a pass from Kristi Fisher and Fuller put it past the keeper to put G-A up 2-0.

Senior Jai Courter settles the ball for the Blue Devil booters.
The Blue Devils continued to attack throughout the half getting a few more shots off before they struck again with 11:47 left. Root dribbled downfield eventually passing the ball to Fuller who found Koons near the goal. Koons capitalized to put the Devils up 3- 0.

East Pennsboro snuck a goal by the defense with 8:34 to play but they could not overcome a 3-1 deficit. Rachel Statler, Jess Higman, Breton Carlson, Kari Monn and goalie Musselman all played tough allowing just one late goal that caused little harm.

G-A finished with four shots on goal along with five penalty corners. Musselman recorded four saves for the Devils. Fuller led with a goal and two assists, while Brechbiel had a goal and an assist, and Koons had a goal.

The junior varsity team won 2- 1 as Dusti Miller and Kellie Webb each recorded goals.

Golf

The G-A golf team had four guys who qualified for the Mid- Penn Conference championships at Range End Golf Club on Tuesday and got one out of the tournament to move on to districts.

Kaytie Johnson (left) and Jacob Leary helped the Blue Devil harriers to victories over james Buchanan last week.
Austin Dunhour led G-A with an 81, the only Blue Devil to qualify for the district tournament. Jordan Gembe ended in a five-way tie for the last spot with an 83, but fell just short in the playoff. Shane Wallaston (87) and Corey Main (99) also missed the cut.

"I didn't have my best game out there but I caught some nice breaks and played well enough to advance to districts," said Dunhour.

"I'm very happy with that. But the true test is next weekend."

Dunhour will travel to play at Briarwood Golf Course for the District 3 tournament Oct. 12-13.

Cross Country

The boys' and girls' teams both defeated James Buchanan in their Mid-Penn Capital Division meet on Tuesday for the first time in coach Rich Secrest's four year career at G-A.

Joe Pasquarello finished first for the boys in 18:11, a personal record on his home course. The second place finisher was 39 seconds behind Pasquarello at 18:50. Jacob Leary took third for the Devils running in 18:56, while Dustie Walker followed two seconds later at 18:58 to qualify him for districts.

Josh Phillips came in seventh with a time of 19:22, while Brandon Thrush and Seth Martin completed the top 10 with times of 20:05 and 20:53 respectively. Michael Hohl, Gabe Martin, and Caleb Lougheed took three of the next four finishing spots to round out the boys' race. The boys won by a score of 24-31.

Randa Bingamin took first in the girls' race with a time of 21:58. Kaytie Johnson finished fourth in 22:59. Krista Kelly followed Johnson with a time of 23:17 putting her in fifth place. Morgan Kelly and Lauren Kelly took eighth and ninth place for the Devils, as Morgan ran in 24:18 and Lauren ran in 24:28. Naomi Madaras took 11th with a time of 27:13. The girls won in a tight one by a score of 27-28.

Both the boys' and the girls' improved to 2-3 in their division.

Soccer

The Blue Devils hosted Boiling Springs on Tuesday for a Mid- Penn Capital Division battle. Mac Frederick scored the winning goal for the Devils with just a minute to play in their 3-2 victory.

The first half went scoreless although the Devils outshot the Bubblers 16-3 and had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. The Devils began to have flashbacks to the James Buchanan and Trinity games where they led the stat columns but didn't come up on the winning side.

The Devils let up a quick goal just two minutes into the second half on a shot from about 15 yards out that was deflected past keeper Christian Hoover. The Devils went on the attack and finally evened the score about 10 minutes later. Frederick directed Josh Higman's throw-in past the keeper to tie the game 1-1.

The Devils continued to attack with some more great chances including another Higman throw just a minute later, but the keeper got to the ball first. Afew minutes later, Frederick slid the ball to Evon Wiestling but the ball was cleared before he could get a shot off. Another Higman throw with 23 minutes to play was headed just wide of the goal.

The Bubblers regained the lead with 16:33 to play because of some miscommunication between sweeper Jordan Gembe and Hoover.

Higman and Frederick hooked up four and a half minutes later when Higman found Frederick's head on another throw-in to make the score 2-2.

The deciding goal came with just a minute to play in the game on another throw from Higman to Frederick to complete his hat trick. The Devils compiled 27 shots and three corner kicks. Hoover recorded five saves in goal.

The junior varsity team defeated the Bubblers 1-0.

The Blue Devils traveled to Camp Hill on Thursday for a Mid- Penn Capital Division showdown to tighten up the standings in the division. The Devils came back after trailing 2-1 at the half to grab a 5-3 victory.

Higman scored the Devils' only first half goal making it past the Camp Hill keeper. Camp Hill leveled the score on a cross that found the head of an attacking player. Camp Hill slid their next goal in on a free kick from about 25 yards while Hoover was attempting to set up a wall from the near post. The Devils went into the half trailing 2-1.

The Devils took over in the second half outscoring the Lions 4-1. Frederick tied the game just 3:09 into the second half. Shortly after, Wes Combs used his body to direct the ball into the net giving G-A a 3-1 lead. Jai Courter rocketed what would be the gamewinning goal in on a pass across the middle from Jordan Springer that Wiestling redirected. Wiestling sealed it by sliding the fifth goal past the keeper to give G-A a 5-2 edge.

Camp Hill made it 5-3 with six minutes to play but it wasn't enough and the Devils hung on to win 5-3. Springer had three assists, while Jesse Herman, Jake Dempsey, Wiestling, and Frederick each added an assist.

The Devils outshot the Lions 25-20 and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Hoover made nine saves in goal while Springer came in late in the game and made three saves.

The Devils fell 2-1 in the junior varsity game.

Volleyball

The unbeaten Blue Devil netters continued to cruise last week, highlighted by a non-divisional sweep of rival Waynesboro on the home court.

G-A kept on its roll at the expense of the Maidens in straight games of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-17. The Devils rejected an early tie in the opening game and coasted, claiming 13 of the final 17 points.

Waynesboro made the second game closer, forging a 12-9 lead and maintained the three-point margin through a 18-15 tally. Once again the Devils surged, recording six points in a row for the lead they would never relinquish.

The Devils never let up on the visitors, staying close early before pulling away for the match.

Leading the statistics were Rochelle Christman with four kills and four blocks and Katie Lutz with five kills and three blocks. Kelsey Gearhart contributed five kills, while Julia Stein added four kills and three aces to the Devil night.

G-A had no trouble at all with Harrisburg, clubbing the Cougars in three, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-7. Lutz (six kills, four blocks), Gearhart (five kills) and Stein (six aces, two kills, two blocks) were the statistical leaders.

The improved Scotland program proved formidable, but the Kayedettes were still dispatched by the Blue Devils in three with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-16. G-A scored in groups of points to dominate. Lutz led at the net with nine kills, while Beth Berger and Stein each chipped in five. Kortney Eshleman tallied 27 set assists in the match.

The varsity Devils also competed in the weekend Cumberland Valley Tournament that featured 24 teams. G-A advanced to the playoff round before being eliminated to finish in a tie for fifth.

The Devils went 7-5 in pool play with 2-0 sweeps in the morning over St. Pius (25-17, 25-16), Central Dauphin East (25-12, 25- 12) and Garden Spot (25-17, 25- 16). Huntingdon tripped the Devils 2-0 in the afternoon, 25-17 and 25-16 and G-A split with Dallastown 1-1 (26-27, 25-19) before finishing strong with a 2-0 win over Carlisle (25-21, 25-14).

The pool play put G-A into a tiebreaker with Dallastown and the Devils came through with a 16-14 win to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Hempfield ended the Devils' day with a 25-15 win.

Statistical leaders from the tourney were: Stein with 23 kills, Lutz with seven blocks, Eshleman with 76 assists and Megan George with eight aces.

In junior varsity action, the Devils swept Waynesboro (25-20, 25-17), Scotland (25-17, 25-21) and Harrisburg (25-4, 25-23). Against Waynesboro, Danni Morgan had three kills and Chelsea Stander three aces. In the Harrisburg match, Ashley Frankenfield had nine aces.

Middle school

Field hockey

The G-AMS varsity Devils ran into a tough goalie and dropped their first game of the season last week. G-A's unblemished record was erased in a 2-1 setback to Shippensburg despite outshooting the Hounds 24-5. "They wanted to complete their middle school career undefeated, but I think they will go away with a much more valuable life lesson after this loss," said coach Sharon Smith. "You win as a team and you lose as a team and more importantly it is just a game."

Brooke Strait scored with the assist from Sarah Gipe.

Earlier in the week, the Devils routed Gettysburg 5-0 on goals from Gipe (two), Strait, Madeleine Gleason and Heather Sanders. Assists were recorded by Jenna Lehman.

The junior varsity had a winning week, blanking Gettysburg 2-0 and Shippensburg 3-0. Goals against Gettysburg came from Hannah Lougheed and Danae Oliver. Lougheed and Tache Smothers had assists. Against Ship, Smothers scored twice and Ashton Rockwell had the third. Callie Coleman had three saves in goal.

Coach Becky Monn said, "The girls played together so well tonight. They moved the ball well and kept the pressure on the whole game."

Football

The Blue Devil middle school gridiron squad scored 22 points in the second quarter and never looked back in a 22-8 final over Big Spring.

"We got off to a slow start," noted G-AMS head coach Don Chlebowski. "For the first time this year we didn't score on the opening drive. Offensively we really got it going in the second quarter with a 22-point outburst.

"Special teams played well again. I am very pleased with the way we hit and swarmed to the ball on defense. And it's been fun to watch some of our young and/or inexperienced guys progress each week."

Jake Statler scored two of the three second-quarter touchdowns, one on a 30-yard pass from Devin Schaeffer, who rushed for the third TD. Schaeffer added a twopoint run conversion and Denton Cordell had another. Schaeffer hit nine of a dozen pass attempts for 100 yards.

Tyler Szaflarski toted the ball 15 times for 90 yards. Statler had five catches for 42 yards and Dustin Kelbaugh also had 42 receiving yards on two completions.
