Blue Devil Dispatch

Soccer

The Blue Devils added to their unblemished record last week by knocking off Trinity, Milton Hershey, York Catholic and Juniata.

G-A started the week with the Mid-Penn Capital Division game against Trinity. The Devils dominated the first half but only found the back of the net three times. Mac Frederick started just 1:40 to give G-A the early lead. Jordan Springer crashed the goal on Josh Higman's long throw-in to put the Devils on the board again. ater giving them the 3-0 lead at half. Evon Wiestling and Jordan Gembe also contributed with assists.

The second half went scoreless as the Devils held on to their shutout. Jonathan Zook had six saves in their victory.

In the JV game, the game came to an end with the score 1-1.

The Devils' first home game was Thursday against Milton Hershey. G-A picked the Spartans apart in a game that ended 12-2. Six different players recorded goals and Mac Frederick and Jai Courter each had hat tricks.

Wiestling started with a perfect header off a Higman throw-in just under four minutes into the game. Shortly after Frederick retrieved a short goal kick and slid the ball past the goalie. G-A made it 3-0 when Jai Courter scored off another Higman assist.

Frederick found the net again off a Wiestling assist for the next goal. After being held scoreless for 17 minutes, Higman had an unassisted goal to make it 5-0. The final goal of the half was an own goal credited to Jordan Springer off a third Higman assist.

The Spartans came out of the half strong as Michael Rucci put a goal in making it 6-1. The Devils made up for it with Wiestling's goal with 30:16 left in the game. Wiestling contributed two minutes later with his pass through a hole in the Spartan defense to Courter who one touched his second goal past the keeper.

Frederick completed his hat trick with a powerful shot at 25:45. The 10th goal was scored by defender Karl Bacon. Springer found the net again for his second goal and Courter completed the scoring with his third goal at the five minute mark.

The JV team was also victorious with a final score of 2-0.

The Devils faced York Catholic in the opening round of the Shippensburg Tournament Saturday. Their starting goalie, Zook, missed the action because of an injury in the football game a night earlier.

Jake Dempsey got the first goal of the day with a close range header into the back of the net off a Higman assist. Frederick scored the second goal on Courter's corner kick in the second half. Substitute goalie Christain Hoover let up his only goal of the day with four seconds remaining in the game. The Devils won the game 2-1.

The Devils met Juniata in the next game. Wiestling found the net in the 15th minute off Higman's assist making it 1-0. G-A struck again late in the first half when Weistling found space in the box. He dribbled down the end line and slid the ball to Bacon who scored. Hoover held Juniata scoreless making the final score 2-0. Although the Devils went 2-0 on the day, the setup of the tournament relying on goal differential put them in second place as Shippensburg took first.

Volleyball

The G-AHS volleyball team opened Mid-Penn Capital Division play at Boiling Springs with a 3-0 victory. They won with scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-9.

Kortney Eshleman led the way with 17 assists, three aces and three kills. Katie Lutz recorded 10 kills and 10 aces while Rochelle Christman added four kills.

Greencastle proved that Harrisburg was no match for them, sweeping the Cougars 3-0 by scores of 25-7, 25-13, and 25-10 in the Mid-Penn Capital Division match held at Greencastle.

The Devils rallied early in the first game with 11 straight points giving them a 17-3 lead. They only allowed four more points in the first game as it ended 25-7.

The hung around in game two and G-A found itself only up by four at 17-13 so they were forced to step it up. Christine Earnharth spiked one and Megan George followed with a serve that the Cougars couldn't handle. Julia Stein kept the streak going as she tipped a ball over the net into an empty area. The Devils converted the last eight points of the game to win 25-13.

Harrisburg turned it on at the start of the third game to keep the score at six apiece. Kelsey Gearhart converted on the next point tipping the ball over the net which gave the Devils some momentum. Gearhart was then the server for four straight points to give G-A an 11-6 lead. Eshleman later had a spike to give the Devils a seven point lead followed soon after by a set to Lutz for a spike.

Eshleman ended with four kills and 19 assists as Lutz recorded six kills and Beth Berger added four. Jennifer Baer had five aces and Kaitlyn Bobbit served four.

The JV team won 2-0 with scores of 25-4 and 25-3. Ashley Frankenfield and Jenny Fisher each had seven aces while Chelsea Stander added three aces and two kills.

The Devils went 7-1 in pool play in the McConnellsburg Tournament this weekend with sweeps over Bedford, McConnellsburg, and Berlin and a split with Shippensburg. The Devils defeated Bedford in the third place game 25-22. Lutz had 31 kills along with 11 blocks and Eshleman had 10 kills and 81 assists. Gearhart had 17 kills, Stein added 13 kills, and Berger had 12 kills and six blocks, while George had 37 digs.

Golf

The Blue Devil linksters finished third in the Mid-Penn Capital Division match at Mayapple on Thursday with a score of 433.

Austin Dunhour led the Devils as he tied for seventh place with an 81 on the par-70 course. Also adding scores in the 80's were Shane Wollaston with an 84 and Zach Witmer with an 88. Other Greencastle scores were: Derrick Barkdoll 90; Corey Main 90; Daniel Bitner 92; and Nathan Pool 99.

Northern took first in the match, winning by 35 strokes at 386 and Trinity grabbed second at 421.

Greencastle currently sits in third place for the season at 13-5, just one game behind Trinity.

Cross Country

The G-A boys' and girls'teams both suffered losses to Shippensburg in the Mid-Penn Capital Division meet on Tuesday. The boys fell 23-33 while the girls lost 19- 36.

The Devils¿ top finisher in the boys race was Joe Pasquarello who finished third with a time of 18:19. G-A had three other competitors that finished in the top 10. Josh Phillips finished fourth completing in 19:09 while Dustin Walker took sixth at 19:41 and Jacob Leary took ninth at 19:58.

Seth Martin, Brandon Thrush, and Mike Hohl finished one after another at 11th, 12th, and 13th place. Not far behind were Caleb Lougheed and Gabe Martin.

In the girls race, Randa Bingaman was the top finisher at third completing the race at 22:27. The girls added four others in the top ten. Kaytie Johnson took sixth at 23:19, Krista Kelly finished eighth at 24:22, Morgan Kelly took ninth at 25:08 while Lauren was just one second behind her finishing in 10th place. Naomi Madaras and Gabriella Henry also competed in the meet.

Field Hockey

The Blue Devils came out fired up Wednesday at home for their Mid-Penn Colonial Division match up against Shippensburg. Unfortunately the Lady Greyhounds had a few quick goals early allowing them to run away with a game that ended 4-1.

The early part of the game was played in G-A territory. Brooke Varner eventually put one in with a shot that hopped over goalkeeper Tasha Musselman's stick and into the cage. About two minutes later the Lady Greyhounds slid another one by Musselman to give Ship the 2-0 lead 12 minutes into the half.

Ship kept attacking and nearly had another goal but it was called back because the shooter was outside the circle and no one inside the circle touched it. The Lady Greyhounds continued to attack forcing Musselman to make some great saves.

Alesha Brechbiel led the Devils into an attack on offense with a nice drive into Ship territory but her shot just missed to the right side. Reagan Fuller followed the play but could not get control of the ball. Brechbiel attacked again drawing a foul deep in Ship territory but the Devils could not convert on the corner. The Devils went into the half down 2-0.

The Devils were set back early in the second half by a quick goal. Brechbiel attacked again, this time almost putting G-A on the board. However, Ship goalie Caren Lauffer was forced to make a great save on the shot.

Soon after Ship got past the defense on a breakaway looking like a scoring opportunity but was eventually caught by the Devil's defense in front of the goal. The Lady Greyhounds scored on the first play after a Blue Devil timeout. Musselman then had a diving save with 4:30 left in the game to keep the Lady Greyhounds from scoring again.

The Devils did sneak one past late in the game. Fuller blasted a hard shot into the cage from the left side.

The JV team fell 3-0 to Shippensburg.

The Blue Devils traveled to Waynesboro Friday for a Mid- Penn Colonial Division match up.

The start of the first half was not really controlled by either team. The ball stayed in the midfield for much of the half eventhough each team had some chances. Waynesboro heated up late in the half and had several shots. Lindsey Egolf found the cage at 8:51 after dribbling up the right side past the defense.

The Maidens continued to attack for the remainder of the half with several shots on goal. Their second goal came on a corner with no time left in the half when Egolf scored again on an assist from Emily Wilson giving them a 2-0 lead.

Waynesboro kept the intensity level up to start the second half. The Devils stepped it up keeping the ball in the midfield for a lot of the half. G-A showed some signs of attack late in the game keeping the ball in Waynesboro territory for most of the last five minutes. The Devils could not seem to put one in as the game ended 2-0.

The Devils finished with nine shots on goal and Musselman recorded 11 saves.

The JV team tied the Maidens 3-3. Shyanne Smith had a goal and an assist and Sarah Jansen had the second goal. Halleigh Benner scored with only 51 seconds left to play.

Middle School

Field Hockey

G-A downed Gettysburg in their opening game by a score of 3-2. Just 3:41 into the game, Sarah Gipe scored on an assist from Jenna Lehman. Gettysburg's Rachel Doehring tied it up with two minutes left in the half.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Gipe struck again to make it 2-1. The Devils scored again when Brooke Daley scored off of a Gipe assist. Gettysburg added their final goal from Mary Kate McCleaf late in the second half.

Coach Smith said, "The girls are putting a lot of pressure on themselves coming off their undefeated season last year. Their excellent passing and full use of the field showed me how serious they are about protecting the streak going into the season."

The junior varsity won 1-0 off a goal from the stick of Kortney Gipe with 10 seconds lef tin the first half. "Coach Becky Monn said, "The girls came out strong in their first game. I was really proud of how they worked together today."

Football

The Devils shut Waynesboro out winning 34-0. Eight different players carried the ball and combined for over 300 rushing yards thanks to a great effort by the offensive line led by Denton Ensminger and Kevin Castellar.

Jake Statler scored first on a 34 yard run followed by a two-point conversion by Devin Schaeffer. Statler struck again in the second quarter on a five yard run. The failed PAT put them up 14-0. Tyler Szaflarski rushed for a 10 yard touchdown followed by a PAT by Schaeffer. Szaflarski found the end zone again in the third quarter on a 13 yard run. The final touchdown was scored by Austin Scott followed by another PAT from Schaeffer.

Szaflarski led the defense with eight tackles followed by Gerardo Juarez who had seven tackles. 23 different players recorded stops for G-A while Jordon Koons and Dustin Kelbaugh both recovered fumbles.

Coach Chlebowski stated, "We are off to a good start but have a long way to go to be at our best. We get to look forward to another
