Commentary The Greencastle-Antrim Emergency Management Office wishes to advise our citizens that the 2007 hurricane season is here. Typically, hurricanes are reduced to tropical storms by the time they reach our community that may bring heavy rains and windy conditions. Therefore, residents and businesses are encouraged to observe the following safety precautions: - Be sure all spouting and gutters, and storm water drains are kept clean; - Keep storm water swales in yards and along roadways clear from debris such as grass clippings, yard waste, and outbuildings. Blockages may cause storm water to back up into basements and foundations; - Notify your municipal office if you observe street or roadway drains clogged with debris during or after a storm event; - Develop a plan to communicate with family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they are safe in the event of high water or power failure; - Be sure to have flashlights, fresh batteries, a first-aid kit, extra food supplies, a manual can opener, fresh water, and essential medicines on hand in the event of an extended power failure; - Teach your children how to summon help in an emergency; - Be sure your address is properly displayed for responding emergency services; - Be sure that dead or dangerous limbs are removed from trees. Additional information may be obtained on the Antrim Township website, www.twp.antrim.pa.us "Prepare for the Hurricane Season." |
