Betty Jane Dehart

Betty Jane Dehart, 81, of 15349 North Young Road, Greencastle, died unexpectedly, Sunday Aug. 26, 2007 in her home.

Born May 26, 1926 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Singer and Lena Mae (Thomas) Smith.

She was a 1944 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Mrs. Dehart worked at the Waynesboro Knitting Mill for 35 years.

She had attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle.

Mrs. Dehart was known for her homemade coconut cake. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and word searches, taking short trips and loved being with her family.

Her husband, Charles William Dehart, died July 1973.

She is survived by two daughters, Saundra L. Helm of Fayetteville and Cindy Lou Chilcoat of Greencastle; a son, Dennis Franklin Dehart of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Frederick Singer Smith Jr. of Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister, Anna Heefner of Chambersburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Jones; brothers, George Clayton Smith and William Smith, and an infant brother Fletcher Smith.

Services were held the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 2 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Joe Pickens officiating.

Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
