Stop Smoking classes

WAYNESBORO - Staying Tobacco Free is offering free Stop Smoking classes every Monday, beginning September 17 and continuing through October 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Waynesboro Hospital, Main Conference Room. Call (717) 262-4691 to register and for more information.

Professionally trained instructors will emphasize long-term "Freedom From Smoking." Class topics include, Thinking About Quitting, Wanting to Quit, Quit Day, On The Road to Freedom, Winning Strategies, Staying Off, The New You, and Celebration. The program is funded in part under a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Women's conference

MONT ALTO - The 15th Annual Cumberland Valley Women's Conference will be hosted by Penn State Mont Alto from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. The conference is a joint effort with Shippensburg University and Wilson College. ain sponsors for this year's event include the First National Bank of Greencastle, Orrstown Bank, Professional Uniform and Advertising Specialties and Summit Health.

The theme for this year's conference is "Healthy Women for Today and Tomorrow." The oneday conference is designed to promote a sense of community among all women of the Cumberland Valley and make women aware of ways they can improve their quality of life. There will be a more than 20 workshops with topics ranging from physical and emotional health to spiritual health and well-being. Twentyfive companies and organizations will present health-related exhibits along with several free health screenings.

Registration is now open and seating is limited. The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $30 and $10 for students. To register, go to the Penn State Mont Alto website (www.ma.psu.edu) and click on the link to print the registration form. Forms are also available at any sponsor location.

Support group

CHAMBERSBURG - "Journey Together" is a 6-week support group offered by Hospice of the Good Shepherd for adults who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one.

Journey Together begins in Chambersburg on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 10 toi 11:30 aama at the Fleck Center, Luther Ridge Retirement Community, 2998 Luther Drive.

Coin show

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Interstate Coin Show, sponsored by the Interstate Coin Club, Inc., will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Grand Venice Hotel, 431 Dual Highway.

CHAMBERSBURG - Dogs of all breeds are invited to go for an end of summer season dip from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 8 at Chambersburg Municipal Pool. Dogs must be friendly and nonaggressive. The cost if $4 per dog.

Antique tractor and car show

MAUGANSVILLE, Md. - The second annual Antique Tractor and Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 17904 Binkley Ave.

The event will feature food, a kids' pedal pull, a parade at noon and barrel rides.

Summer concert series

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will conclude its Red, White and Blue Summer Concert Series Sunday, Sept. 9 when the U.S. Army Field Band Soldier's Chorus will perform at 3:30 p.m.

All concerts are free, open to the public, and will be held in HCC's Alumni Amphitheater.

The event is co-sponsored by the HCC Alumni Association, Joint Veteran's Council of Washington County, Club Association of Washington County, 40/8 Voiture Locale 651, VFW Post 1936, and AMVETS Department of Maryland, Inc.

The HCC Alumni Association will sell concessions at the concert.

Summit bariatric support

group

CHAMBERSBURG - The Summit Bariatric Support Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Center at Chambersburg Hospital.

The group is for individuals who have already had weight loss surgery, or are considering surgery as an option. Relevant topics will be presented by a variety of professionals.

Wellness program

CHAMBERSBURG - Luther Ridge Retirement Community will host a monthly Wellness Program on its campus, on the second Friday of each month at 2 p.m. The topics are general in nature and presented by a nurse from Lutheran Home Care Services. Refreshments will be served.

The program is free of charge and open to anyone in the community. No registration is required.

Old jail and museum open

CHAMBERSBURG - The Old Jail Museum, 175 E. King St., is now open for the season from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October with "Stories from the Jail" tours by the Franklin County Historical Society-Kittochtinny.

Diabetes support group

CHAMBERSBURG - The Franklin County Diabetes Support Group has announced its meetings calendar through November 2007. All meetings will begin at 7 p.m.

Sept. 13 - Waynesboro Hospital, Conference Room; Sept. 17 - Summit Health Improvement Center, Conference Room; Topic: Planning a carbohydrate consistent diet.

Nov. 8 - Waynesboro Hospital, Conference Room; Nov. 19 - Summit Health Improvement Center, Conference Room; Topic: Goal setting to make lifestyle changes.

No registration is required for these free events. Any diabetic patient or family members with questions, please call (717) 217- 6820. This support group is a service of Summit Health.

Alzheimers support group

SOUTH MOUNTAIN - A local alzheimer's support group, "Living in the Moment," meets the last Monday of each month (except December) at Michaux Manor.

The group, offers video presentations, informative speakers and new friends to provide participants with compassion, support and answers to your questions. Attendees may just listen. Homemade refreshments are also served at each meeting.

There is no charge and it is always opened to the public.

Well Spouse support group

The Well Spouse Southern Pa. support group for spouses or partners of ill or disabled persons meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month at the Antrim House Restaurant, 104 E. Baltimore St.

The Well Spouse Association is a national organization dedicated to offering emotional support to the wives, husbands and partners of the chronically ill or disabled.
